A full term, normal baby does not need any vitamin supplements if
his mother is breastfeeding. Your diet should include seasonal fruits,
vegetables, sprouts, whole grains and nuts.
Babies who are given cow or buffalo milk do need extra vitamins.
Formula milk (from baby milk powders) has added vitamins so babies who
are on formula milk do not need extra vitamins
Iron drops are advised to babies who are anemic, but after 6-8 weeks of
birth. If your baby was born preterm Pediatrician may advise Vitamin E
drops, vitamin D and Calcium to your baby.
Your pediatrician may give your newborn baby a dose of Vitamin K,
based on the premise that it takes some time for the newborn to start
making this important vitamin in her system. The first milk produced by
the mother (colostrum) is rich in this vitamin and all babies should
get colostrum. It has also been seen that the amount of Vitamin K in
breast milk can be increased if the mother’s diet includes leafy
vegetables.
