USING NAPPIES

Nappies can be disposable types or reusable fabric types. Fabric nappies are available as terry toweling, flannelette or muslin squares or fitted, panty-shaped nappies. Varieties are increasing by the day. I do not recommend overuse of disposable nappies because this practice is associated with more incidences of nappy rashes as compared to reusable cloth nappies. Cloth nappies are also more environment friendly. Disposable nappies are OK for a short period; when going out of home, to market, to doctor, traveling etc but avoid using all the time at home. Let there be short periods of no nappies exposing your baby’s perineum (area around anus and urine orifice) to fresh air; it is so healthy and natural. Among western mothers there is a tendency to overuse nappies especially disposable types. They may use up to 10-12 nappies every day. This practice is quite deplorable.

A word about nappy rash- this happens when baby’s skin remains in contact with urine and potty for a long time. Some mothers do not clean potty and urine from the baby’s skin properly. To avoid this problem ; after passage of urine or potty , wipe your baby’s skin thoroughly with a clean wet cloth or wet cotton wool and then wipe it gently with a dry cloth and expose her skin to lots of air. Also, wash your baby’s perineum with clean water from time to time. As I have said earlier nappies may increase this problem so avoid their overuse.
