GROWTH OF YOUR BABY

Dear mom, during your baby’s general check up and vaccinations visits his Pediatrician will measure the weight, length and head circumference of the baby .He will inform you about your baby’s growth and whether your baby is growing normally or not. Here are some tips on how to assess growth of your baby.

GROWTH IN WEIGHT :

During first few days the most newborns lose about 8 to 10 percent of their birth weight. They usually regain their weight by tenth day and in some cases even up to two weeks. Thereafter a normal baby gains 25 to 30 grams per day during first 3 months of life, and about 20 grams per day between 3-6 months, about 15 grams per day between 6-9 months and about 12 grams per day between 9-12 months. In other words baby’s weight is doubled by 5 months and tripled by first birthday

GROWTH IN LENGTH :

Average length of a newborn baby is 50 cm. Baby gains about 3.5 cm per month during first three month, about 2.0 cm per month during 3-6 months, about 1.5 cm per month during 6-9 months and about 1.3cm per month during 9-12 month. Baby is about 60 cm at 3 months, 70cm at 9 months, 73 to 75 cm at 12 months thus 50 percent gain over birth length occurs by first birthday. Your Baby’s Pediatrician will measure your baby’s length on a machine known as Infantometer. This can also be done in a simple way by using a measuring steel tape but remembers to straighten well the lower limbs of the baby.
