EXPRESSED BREAST MILK

WHY WILL YOU NEED TO EXPRESS BREAST MILK?

There are a number of reasons why a breast feeding mother might need to express her milk

  • The baby may be premature and too small to suck properly. Your expressed milk can be fed to the baby through a tube.
  • The baby may be sick and can not breastfeed properly. Mother can give her expressed milk by spoon or healthcare giver may give it by tube.
  • Some babies with a cleft lip or palate find it difficult to suck and need to be fed expressed milk with a special bottle or specially shaped teat.
  • Mother may need to leave the baby with someone else for the time being. Her expressed milk can be fed to the baby with a cup and spoon.
  • Mother may be working outside the home and may wish to provide breast milk to her baby while she is away.
  • Mother may wish to express a small amount of milk to mix with her baby’s first solid foods.
  • To relieve severe engorgement.
  • To relieve sore or cracked nipples.

HAND VERSUS PUMP EXPRESSION OF BREAST MILK

Hand expression is the safest and best way of expressing milk and I personally recommend it .Even if you are working full time and long hours you may express enough milk by hand expression .However ,if for some reason you can not do  hand expression then you may use a pump which could be hand operated, battery operated or electrical.
